About Barbara Donovan

Barbara Donovan’s crochet journey began during her school days when she first learned how to create a Granny Square blanket. It was a craft she instantly fell in love with, and crochet has been her passion ever since. What started as a simple hobby quickly evolved into a lifelong dedication, leading Barbara to explore new ways of expressing her creativity through yarn.

After successfully running a previous business, Barbara expanded her craft expertise by designing crochet patterns for King Cole Yarns, a well-known name in the yarn industry. Her designs were recognised for their distinctive style and attention to detail, and she was soon creating patterns that inspired crafters across the country. This success motivated her to launch her own business in 2019, and thus, Joseph Bear Designs was born.

Named after her beloved bear, Joseph, the company specialises in crochet kits and patterns that are bursting with character, each design telling its own unique story. From playful animals to cosy accessories, Barbara’s creations are crafted with the aim of bringing joy to both the maker and the recipient. Every design is carefully thought out, making them accessible for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned crocheters.

Barbara’s new book, CROCHETED DOGS: Featuring Cute Canine Patterns for Cushions, Bags, Accessories, and More, published by CICO BOOKS, is due for release 9th September 2025.
